This movie has an incredibly interesting premise: how do you create a marketing campaign so compelling it can unseat a dictator? The events are based off the real-life “No” campaign that overthrew Chile’s Pinochet in 1988, but it didn’t live up to its potential in my opinion. Scenes feel disjointed and the lack of a soundtrack makes it look like we’re watching historical footage instead of a movie. I assume that’s what they were going for considering it’s also shot on old-fashioned video tape, but it has the effect of massively reducing the dramatic tension. In addition, I just had a really hard time following the story / what was happening. It felt like it was stuck between wanting to be a documentary and a dramatic film, which makes it ultimately fail to be either.
